Diaconal Ministry on Death Row
Thursday 21st March 2024: 7:15 for 7:30pm - ZOOM
What does it mean to minister alongside someone who has been sentenced to death by the government? How might that ministry and experience ripple out and transform other communities and contexts in pastoral care, discipleship, and church life? Sion College is honored to host a Zoom Seminar with the Rev Charles deGravelles, a Deacon in The Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Louisiana. He has served numerous roles, in parishes, school, diocesan, and in prison. He will speak in some depth about his experience of journeying alongside Feltus Taylor, a man who spent 9 years on Death Row before being executed in 2000. There will be time for questions and we hope to reflect on Christian life in incredibly difficult circumstances and how this has shaped and impacted Charlie’s ministry.
The Revd Charles deGravelles is a writer, musician, and photographer, and was ordained a deacon in 1995 and currently serves as Archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana. A founder of the Episcopal ministry at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, now the Chapel of the Transfiguration, Charlie has worked for over 30 years with incarcerated men and women, including three years as a spiritual advisor for a Death Row inmate. He has also ministered to the homeless and those recovering from addictions. He served as chaplain and teacher at Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, and is now the director of the Quest for Peace social justice program at that school. Charlie leads worship at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Rosedale, Louisiana.
Sion College will make a donation from proceeds for this event to a charity of Charles’s choosing. Given the Zoom format of this event it is expected that all attendees will be given a place – with no reserves list in operation unless numbers exceed our Zoom licence.
