Magnify the Lord: The Gift of Choral Evenson: Evensong at St Bartholomew-the-Great followed by an address on the History of Evensong
“My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” Most of us will have sung or listened to these words set to music at Choral Evensong at some point in our walk of faith. Evensong is a distinctly Church of England and Anglican service, laid out in the Book of Common Prayer and is foundational for many in their worship of God. It is sung in churches and cathedrals around the world, in settings which are grand and professional as well as those that are smaller and gentle. Some see it as intimidating and perhaps a vestige of the past, and for others it has offered a glimpse into the heart of God. Choral Evensong remains the BBC’s longest running outside broadcast programme.
