A Sion College Seminar with Professor Jane Shaw: Evelyn Underhill: A pioneer of modern spirituality

Evelyn Underhill (1875 - 1941) was a key figure in the revival of Christian mysticism in the early twentieth century: as the author of the widely read book, Mysticism (1911), still in print today, and numerous other publications, and as a spiritual director and retreat leader. Her influence as an Anglican laywoman was considerable, and she was at the centre of a hub of men and women, ordained and lay, who sought to cultivate a serious spiritual life and drew on the medieval mystics to do so. This talk will look at Underhill in her own times, and what she might have to teach us today.

Professor Jane Shaw is Principal of Harris Manchester College, Professor of the History of Religion, and a Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oxford. She has previously held posts as Dean of Divinity at New College, Oxford; Dean of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco; and Dean for Religious Life at Stanford University where she was also Professor of Religious Studies. A historian, her research explores modern religion, the arts, gender, and technology’s societal impact.
