A wine reception and lecture with Dr Naomi Paxton

Suffragettes and the Arts - A wine reception and lecture with Dr Naomi Paxton

Monday 20th May, 2024, 7 for 7:30pm

Wilton’s Music Hall, Graces Alley, London E1 8JB

Politics impacts all aspects of our lives, no matter how involved we make ourselves in the democratic process. In the 1900s as women sought the right to vote on the same terms as men the suffragist movement was involved not just in the obvious political arenas but was also deeply embedded in other aspects of the national life. One such area was in performing arts, seeking to change hearts and minds and further the cause through drama and especially plays.

We are joined by Dr Naomi Paxton, a professional performer and actor who trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of the Arts (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), and who has appeared in the West End and on UK tours since 1999. Naomi completed her doctoral thesis: Re-evaluating the Actresses Franchise League: Actresses, Politics and Activism, in the Drama department of the University of Manchester in 2015 and one of her research topics is performative presentations of feminism and political activism, particularly in the women’s suffrage movement.
