Gin & other crazes: the social history of food in Britain
A Sion College seminar with Pen Vogler - on Zoom
Thursday 21st January 2021: 7:00 for 7:30pm
Pen Vogler is a food historian and author of Scoff: A History of Food and Class in Britain, Dinner with Mr Darcy and Dinner with Dickens. She edited Penguin’s Great Food series, writes about food history for the press and has recreated recipes from the past for BBC television.
In this seminar Pen will take a close look at gin, to show us how it has provoked unique horror and fascination, and why attempts to end the ‘gin craze’ of the eighteenth century had repercussions up to the present day.
Applicants to this Sion College seminar are asked on the application form to confirm their postal address. Attendees will be sent a copy of Pen’s book, Scoff (RRP £20), as well as a gin sample package during the week before the event.
If you have not yet registered for online payment you will be asked to do this and your registration will need to be validated by the Administrator before you can use the facility. You will only need to register once, and for any applications for subsequent events you will need only to log in. Payment is taken by PayPal, but you do not need a PayPal account.
